CAIRO - 1 February 2026: Egypt is considering resuming sugar trading on the Egyptian Commodity Exchange as part of efforts to stabilize markets, curb price volatility, and enhance transparency, according to an official statement.

The issue was discussed during a meeting between Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk and Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk, attended by Head of the Mostaqbal Misr Sustainable Development Authority Bahaa El-Ghannam.

Sugar trading on the commodity exchange was suspended in December 2023, along with corn and wheat, after authorities cited speculative practices that disrupted markets and led to the cancellation of several wheat tenders. Officials said at the time that trading could resume once market conditions improve.

During the meeting, Sherif Farouk said the sugar industry is a strategic sector due to its impact on food security and market stability, stressing the importance of coordination between relevant authorities to boost domestic production and improve manufacturing efficiency.

Alaa Farouk said the agriculture ministry is expanding cultivation of sugar beet and sugar cane, supporting farmers, and promoting the use of high-yield seeds and modern farming techniques to increase output.

El-Ghannam said closer integration between agricultural production, manufacturing, and trading is key to achieving sustainable self-sufficiency in strategic commodities.
