The Egyptian Commodities Exchange (Egycomex) finalized executive procedures to launch sugar trading on its electronic platform, aiming to enforce governance, market discipline, and price transparency across the domestic market.
Sugar trading on the commodity exchange was suspended in December 2023.
Mostafa Abdel Gawad, head of Sugar Crops Council of the Ministry of Agriculture, confirmed that Egypt is witnessing a significant breakthrough in achieving self-sufficiency in sugar, which is considered one of the country’s strategic crops.
The cultivated area of sugar beets rose by 25% in the 2024/25 season, reaching 750,000 feddans—up from 600,000 feddans in 2023/24. This expansion is expected to boost sugar beet production to 2.5 million tons, compared to 1.5 million tons in the previous season.
The quantity would be mostly offered in subsidized prices in order to make up for the shortage the local market is enduring.

Trading on sugar is expected to begin on Thursday, Reuters cited Ibrahim Ashmawy, the head of the exchange as saying. He noted that the decision aligns with a governmental directive aimed at “regulating the markets of strategic and basic commodities.”

The first and second lines of the factory have been started with a production capacity of 18,000 tons of sugar per day, in preparation for reaching the maximum production capacities of about one million tons per year during the next year 2023.
