CAIRO - 11 August 2025: Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel El-Wazir, held talks in Cairo with Japanese Ambassador Fumio Iwai to review ongoing joint projects and explore new avenues of cooperation in the transport and industrial sectors.
The meeting, attended by senior officials from both sides, underscored the strong political and economic ties between Egypt and Japan. El-Wazir praised the fruitful collaboration in strategic projects, particularly in transport, while expressing interest in expanding cooperation in manufacturing and industrial development.
Ambassador Iwai welcomed the discussions, highlighting growing Japanese investor interest in Egypt’s business climate and citing the first phase of Cairo Metro Line 4 as a successful model.
Talks focused on advancing technical education and skills development through a protocol signed between the Productive Capacity and Vocational Training Authority and the Cabinet’s Education Development Fund, with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The initiative aims to produce highly skilled technicians for local and global markets, particularly in electronics and green energy, by combining classroom learning with hands-on training in Japanese-operated factories in Egypt.
The discussions also covered the state’s vehicle manufacturing incentives programme, which offers benefits for both manufacturers and consumers, with positive outcomes expected for all automotive producers, including Japanese companies such as Nissan.
Progress on the first phase of Metro Line 4, a 19-km route linking 6 October City to Fustat with 17 stations, was reviewed. Japanese firm Mitsubishi is providing 23 trains and carrying out the electromechanical works and workshop construction. The first train is expected to arrive in May 2026. Preparations are also underway for subsequent phases, which will extend the line into New Cairo, Hosary Square, and eventually to the Capital Airport Station, connecting with other major transport networks such as the East Nile Monorail and the Light Electric Train.
According to the ministry, the multi-phase Metro Line 4 project will significantly expand Cairo’s urban transport capacity, boost connectivity between key districts, and reinforce Egypt’s position as a hub for advanced infrastructure development in the region.
