Egypt introduces natural gas in 3.5M units since mid-2018

CAIRO – 15 May 2021: Minister of Petroleum stated Saturday that since mid-2018 natural gas has been introduced in 3.5 million units substituting the use of butane-gas cylinders subsidized by the government.

 

In FY2020/2021 only, natural gas has been introduced in more than one million units with a progress rate of 102 percent. The cost of installing gas supply networks in units is paid in installments over six years. The value of each installment is LE30 per month.

 

As for upcoming FY2021/2022, the target is 1.2 million units. Those are located in 79 villages/neighborhoods across 14 governorates, which are Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Sharqia, Gharbeya, Daqahleya, Menoufeya, Beheira, Qalyoubeya, Beni Suef, Menya, Asyut, Sohag, and Qena.  

 

The minister noted that natural gas was introduced in 59 villages within Decent Life initiative, and that14 others will be included in the program in the next fiscal year. Also, studies and preparations are underway to introduce natural gas networks in further 217 villages.

 

With regard to pre-paid meters, 266,000 of those have been installed across Egypt.
