Egypt supports counterterrorism efforts in Tunisia: Sisi

CAIRO - 24 February 2019: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi asserted Egypt’s stance supporting Tunisia in its counterterrorism efforts, and the measures taken by its political leaderships to preserve the state’s security pointing out to similarities in conditions and challenges faced by both countries.

In his meeting with Tunisian counterpart Beji Caid Essebsi on Sunday, the president stressed the importance of strengthening security cooperation and exchanging information on terrorist groups, and the returnees from conflict areas who compose a threat to both countries and the entire region.

Both heads of state met on the sidelines of the Arab-European Summit as Essebsi invited his Egyptian counterpart to attend the Arab League Summit hosted by Tunisia on March 21.

President Sisi hailed the development of ties between both countries. He added that Egypt and Tunisia have to push forward trade exchange and mutual investments.

The Tunisian president valued the close relations with Egypt, and praised what it had achieved in the realms of security, stability, and development over the past years. He added that Egypt reinstated its leading and effective role on the regional and international scales.

Essebsi said that is embodied in Egypt’s chairmanship of the African Union, and hosting the first edition of the Arab-European Summit. The Tunisian president highlighted that Egypt is expected to play a pivotal role in improving joint African-Arab cooperation, and to further back endeavors aiming at reaching political solutions for the regional crises.
