Both a thriller and psychological drama, the film is a case study of the backstage workings of a theatrical production; a system where everybody is looking for their big break. Portman won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Nina, a New York City ballerina who is gradually descending into madness while preparing for the lead role in Swan Lake. Nina’s fears and worries are exacerbated by three women: her obsessive mother (Hershey), a former ballerina; the new dancer Lily (Kunis), who competes with her for the leading role; and Beth (Ryder) whose career was abruptly put on hold. |
