A new sandwich bar gives Heliopolis fast food venues a run for their money
By Nadine El Sayed
Quick street bites have never been better, or cleaner for that matter. New sandwich Heliopolis sensation Adams is fast proving a hit. Just a few meters wide, Adams only has a couple of counters around to take your sandwich and lean against — and my favorite bit, a couple of counters set against the street posts. So instead of the usual grab a sandwich, eat it in the car and make an un-cleanable mess, you can just munch your food standing in the quiet side street and enjoy the overall young and hip vibe. Adam’s offers a variety of sandwiches and meals that aren’t typical of fast-food cuisine, ranging from delish tandoori chicken sandwiches (LE 22) to doner kebab and fried Camembert cheese. We ordered those three and loved all of them. The tandoori chicken, though, isn’t for the faint-hearted, it is a little spicy. If you have never tried doner kebabs before, they look like dried beef in shawerma-like wraps and taste like a mixture of shawerma and pastrami. Even for a non-meat lover like myself, the doner kebab sandwich (LE 23) was yummy, especially with the added melted cheese. My runaway favorite was the fried Camembert cheese, although admittedly it was a little pricey at LE 15 for three pieces. Then again, Camembert cheese isn’t exactly cheap. We also tried the chicken kebabs with rice, which was well spiced and tender. You can order any of their items over salad or basmati rice and they also have frozen yogurts that we were just too full to try. The restaurant also runs a delivery services to Heliopolis, although the fleet is still only two bikes. To ensure a clean and quality meal, the family owning Adam’s is always there supervising. Adding to the coziness of the place, the father stands outside and chats with the standing customers, the mother mans the fryer and the son works the till. All in all, the little details — like the Bose speakers — are well attended to. So although the prices aren’t typical of a fast-food take-out place, the quality and variety aren’t either.
