US Secretary of Treasury, Sudanese Irrigation Minister stress the need to reach GERD fair legal agreement

CAIRO – 6 January 2020: US Secretary of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin and the Sudanese Minister of Irrigation, Yasser Abbas, stressed, Wednesday during their meeting in Khartoum the need to reach a fair legal agreement on the mobilization and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
 
Sudanese Minister of Finance Heba Mohamed Ali signed, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Mnuchin to settle the African country’s debt to the World Bank.
 
According to a statement by the Sudanese Finance Ministry, the move will help Sudan claim over one billion dollars from the WB annual funding for the first time in 27 years.
 
The ministry considered the move as a key step toward the nation’s economic recovery.
 
Mnuchin arrived in Khartoum, Wednesday leading a high-ranking delegation on a one-day visit to Sudan.
 
Minister of Finance and Economic Planning Heba Mohamed Ali received him at the airport.
The visit, is the first to be paid by the US official, comes within the framework of upgrading bilateral relations after removing the name of Sudan from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.
