Egypt’s Transport min, Hungarian amb to Cairo discuss cooperation

CAIRO – 23 September 2020: Egypt’s transportation Minister Kamel el Wazir held talks, Tuesday with Hungary’s ambassador in Cairo on promoting cooperation in the various transportation fields.

Wazir lauded the current Egyptian-Hungarian cooperation in the transportation field represented in a deal to provide 1,300 rail cars worth € 16 million, describing it as the biggest deal in Egypt's railway history.

The coaches will be supplied by the Russian-Hungarian consortium, led by Transmashholding, the largest manufacturer of locomotives and rail equipment in Russia.

This deal will highly boost the quality of services offered to railway passengers, he added.

He affirmed the need for abiding by the timetable for the delivery of the new wagons.

The Ministry of Transportation aims at customizing the railway industry in Egypt by establishing the first factory for electric wagons in the Suez Canal Economic Zone through the public and private sector partnership to manufacture units for the railways, metro, monorail and tram, he added.

This field could provide an opportunity for fruitful cooperation between Egypt and friendly countries such as Hungary, he said.

On Sunday, Egypt’s railway authority said that they are preparing to receive a newly- contracted Russian railway passenger vehicles batch, within days.

The new batch includes 22 new vehicles with dynamic ventilation as part of the contract with Transmash Holding to manufacture and supply 1,300 air-conditioned and regular vehicles.

In a statement August 25 for Minister of Transport Kamel Al-Wazir, he said that that this deal is the largest deal in the history of Egyptian Railways, which was signed by the Egyptian Railways Authority and the Russian company, Transmach, representing the Russian-Hungarian consortium, worth €1.16 billion.

 

He noted that the 1,300 new passenger vehicles deal includes 800 air-conditioned vehicles (500 third-class air-conditioned vehicles, a new service that is offered to passengers for the first time in the history of Egypt Railways, 180 luxurious second-class vehicles, 90 luxurious first-class vehicles and 30 air-conditioned buffet cars, in addition to 500 third-class air-conditioned vehicles.

The statement  added that the new carriages will be added to the daily operating schedule of the railway, so that citizens will witness the monthly entry of 3 completely new trains consisting of tractors and vehicles, which will contribute to the continuation of improving the service provided to the public of passengers and making a huge qualitative leap in the level of the vehicle fleet of the railway.
