CAIRO – 18 June 2017: Sudanese Foreign Minister Ibrahim Ghandour affirmed his country’s neutral position towards Qatar, stressing his support for the mediation efforts to settle the Arab Gulf crisis, Sudan Tribune reported.

Ghandour met Friday with the ambassadors of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Khartoum to discuss the recent rift between their countries and Qatar.

Sudanese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Gharib Khidir stated that “The minister expressed Sudan’s desire to participate in the ongoing diplomatic efforts to settle the rift between the Arab countries.”

The ambassadors expressed "their appreciation of Sudan’s position and role in promoting solidarity and unity, and in safeguarding Arab national security," Khidir added.

Qatar’s relations with several Arab states have been strained since May 24 over a leaked statement attributed to Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, criticizing Gulf foreign policy with Iran, describing it as “unwise.”

The Qatari crisis was escalated when Egypt and a coalition of Arab states in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) announced a coordinated diplomatic break with Qatar, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. The Arab countries, in dispute with Qatar, accused the peninsular country of funding Islamist terrorists, in part via the Doha-based Al Jazeera satellite channel.
