BEIRUT, Dec 17 (MENA) - Lebanese security forces took control of confrontation spots in central Beirut following fierce clashes with groups comprising hundreds of people who tried to break into the main protest squares of Martyrs' and Riad El Solh.

The groups were forced to retreat back to the entrance of al Khanqak al Amiq area as clashes became less violent.

Tear gases were fired to disperse the groups and prevent them from taking over the Beirut main protest squares.

Meanwhile, units affiliated with the army stationed in several nearby streets and cordoned off the area to back the security forces.
