CAIRO – 16 June 2017: Qatar has tried five men whose names were placed on Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain’s terrorist list, Bloomberg

reported

Thursday, citing two Western officials and a Qatari official.

“The legal action wasn’t announced to avoid embarrassing the men’s families -- some of whom are among the most prominent in the country,” the U.S. news website quoted the Qatari official as saying.

The officials said the authorities in Qatar froze the assets of the five defendants over their involvement in terrorism-related charges. Bloomberg said four of them have moved cash for al-Qaeda since the early 2000s, according to U.S. and UN statements.

Some of the men were jailed or put under house arrest. Others were acquitted but have been banned from travel and are under 24-hour surveillance, the officials said without indicating when the sentences were issued.

Qatar is set to two others who are included on the Saudi terrorist list, the officials said.
Last week, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Bahrain announced they added 59 individuals and 12 organizations with ties to Qatar to their terrorist watch list, days after cutting ties with the tiny Gulf state.
