CAIRO – 13 May 2017: On the cusp of Ramadan, an Egyptian vendor has come up with an innovative approach to promote dates, a native staple of the holy month, by naming the different types after famous world leaders.

In his shop in Alexandria, Ahmed Mostafa named the most expensive and highest quality dates type after President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, costing 50 EGP per kilo ($2.77). Another type carrying the name of Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi costs 30 EGP.

Meanwhile, American President Donald Trump’s dates cost 28 EGP; Saudi King Salman’s and Russian President Putin’s are sold for 24 EGP.

Some types are also named after former Egyptian presidents, such as Anwar el-Sadat (22 EGP), Mohamed Hosny Mubarak (28 EGP) and Gamal Abdel Nassar (24 EGP).
Each type is presented in the shop along with a photo of the leader whose name it carries.

The idea originally started after the June 30 events, “by naming the dates after the icons of the revolution,” Mostafa said.
