CAIRO – 24 August 2017: Parts of streets in Zamalek are to be closed for a year starting from August 25, due to the construction of a fourth-line underground metro station in the district and an air vent, security source said.

Cairo Transportation Authority, in cooperation with the Egyptian National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) is shifting transportation to alternative streets during the closure of parts of Ismail Mohamed and Mansour Mohamed streets. Traffic signs and services are to be available to facilitate traffic flow, the source added.

Residents have recently launched a campaign to cancel the project or at least divert the route of the metro, proposing different routes for the new line to prevent it from going through Ismail Mohamed Street, where they fear old buildings “might collapse” as a result of the planned digging.
