CAIRO - 7 August 2017: The Egyptian Armed Forces will acquire the second German-made “Type 209” submarine on Tuesday in the city of Kiel, among other submarines that will consecutively join the Egyptian navy.

Commander-in-Chief of ‎the Egyptian Navy Rear Admiral Ahmed Khaled and a number of Egyptian military leaders will attend the ceremony held in the Port of Kiel, Germany, where the submarine will be announced Egyptian.

The acquired submarine is armed with torpedoes for securing Egyptian coasts and regional waters and preserving national security.

Last December, the Egyptian flag was raised on the first “Type 209” submarine received in Kiel, Germany.

The 64.4-meter-long “Type 209/1400” attack submarine was first made in the 1960s. It’s able to sail for up to 11,000 nautical miles, attain speeds up to 44 km/hour undersea, and can submerge to a test depth of 500 meters, according to Military Factory.
