Iran says talks with Oman on Hormuz Strait make progress

CAIRO – 26 July 2026: Iran said Sunday that technical talks with Oman on the Strait of Hormuz have made progress, while stating that shipping traffic through the strategic waterway remains unchanged.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Tehran hosted several rounds of talks on Friday and Saturday between the Iranian and Omani deputy foreign ministers.

During the discussions, the two sides exchanged views on shared principles and implementation mechanisms for ensuring the safe passage of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz while respecting the sovereign rights of the two coastal states.

"The talks were useful and made progress," Baghaei said, adding that the Omani delegation departed Tehran on Saturday afternoon and that technical and political consultations between the two countries are continuing.

Responding to questions about the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei said there has been no change in maritime traffic through the vital shipping lane.

The talks come amid heightened regional tensions stemming from the ongoing Iran war and mounting concerns over maritime security in the Gulf and the Red Sea.

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted during the conflict, while the Houthis have announced a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, raising fears of further disruptions to global energy supplies and international trade.
