CAIRO – 16 July 2026: Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Amman, Jordan, to discuss the latest developments regarding the Palestinian cause.
During the meeting, Fahmy affirmed the Arab League's unwavering support for the State of Palestine and strongly rejected Israeli actions aimed at undermining the two-state solution.
He expressed deep appreciation for President Abbas’s leadership of the Palestinian national project, emphasizing the League's solidarity with the Palestinian leadership amid mounting regional pressures and challenges.
The Secretary-General stressed that strengthening the resilience of the Palestinian state and its people remains a top priority, pledging that the Arab League will continue to champion Palestine's rights in all international forums.
Fahmy warned that the Israeli occupation is actively working to dismantle any prospect of a two-state solution. He noted that the Israeli government is attempting to impose a new reality in the West Bank through intensified settlement expansion, forced displacement, the blockade of Palestinian cities, and by allowing settler violence against Palestinians to continue unchecked. Confronting these schemes, he added, is a shared Arab and international responsibility.
He urged all nations supporting the two-state solution to take immediate action to protect the viability of a political settlement.
President Abbas shared his vision for the priorities of the next phase, focusing on international diplomatic efforts to capitalize on the rising global support for the Palestinian cause—particularly among younger generations whose awareness is being shaped by the ongoing conflict and human rights violations.
Fahmy stressed that international support for Palestine must be backed by concrete, practical steps. He emphasized the urgent need to support the Palestinian Authority’s budget to help alleviate the financial crisis caused by Israel's withholding of tax revenues.
He also welcomed the announcement of Palestinian legislative elections scheduled for this coming November, calling it a significant step toward unifying the Palestinian political stance.
The discussions also touched upon developments in the Gaza Strip. The Secretary-General reasserted that the Palestinian Authority must be the primary actor in any future administrative or security arrangements for the territory.
He concluded by reiterating that the Gaza Strip is an inseparable part of the envisioned sovereign Palestinian state within the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, stressing that the territorial integrity of Palestine must be preserved in any future political process.
