CAIRO – 5 July 2026: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty called for renewed international focus on the Palestinian cause as he discussed regional developments, including the US-Iran deal, with European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica.

Abdelatty underscored the importance of redirecting international efforts to the Palestinian cause in a way that would help complete the full implementation of the first phase of the US president's peace plan and pave the way for moving to the second phase.

The minister also briefed the European official on Egypt's positions regarding developments in Lebanon, Libya and Sudan, reaffirming Cairo's commitment to efforts aimed at resolving regional conflicts.

US-Iran Deal

The consultations covered the latest developments in the US-Iran negotiating track.

Abdelatty outlined Egypt's assessment of the rapidly evolving regional situation and its ongoing efforts to resolve conflicts across the region.

He stressed the importance of building on the momentum created by the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran.

He said this should pave the way for more sustainable arrangements that reinforce de-escalation, strengthen regional security and stability, and safeguard freedom of navigation in accordance with international law.

Strategic Partnership

Meanwhile, the foreign minister welcomed the continued progress in Egypt-EU ties, particularly following last year's Egypt-EU Summit, which he said gave strong momentum to cooperation under the six pillars of the Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership.

He highlighted the importance of building on the outcomes of both the summit and the 11th EU-Egypt Association Council meeting, held in Luxembourg in mid-June.

The minister stressed the need to further strengthen economic, trade and investment cooperation, describing economic collaboration as a cornerstone of the strategic partnership.

He also expressed appreciation for the EU's support for Egypt's economic reform program and financial stability, as well as cooperation in education, scientific research and skills development through programs including Horizon Europe and Erasmus+.

He also welcomed the launch of the Pact for the Mediterranean as an important step toward strengthening Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to working with European partners in a spirit of partnership, mutual respect and shared responsibility. He also presented Egypt's vision for the initiative, along with a number of proposed projects.

For her part, Šuica reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to further strengthening its Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership with Egypt, as a key EU partner in the Southern Mediterranean.

She also praised Egypt's pivotal role in promoting regional security and stability, as well as its efforts to address shared challenges and strengthen cooperation across the Mediterranean.
