CAIRO - 1 July 2026: Nabil Fahmy officially assumed his duties as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States on Wednesday, during a ceremony held at the General Secretariat headquarters in Cairo.
 
He succeeds Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose term has ended.
 
 
Handover Ceremony at the League Headquarters
 
The handover ceremony took place in the presence of the Assistant Secretaries-General and a number of officials and staff members of the General Secretariat.
 
Nabil Fahmy officially took over his position, marking a formal transition of leadership at the League of Arab States and the beginning of a new phase of joint Arab action.
 
Following the ceremony, the new Secretary-General received briefings from General Secretariat officials on several recent developments in political matters.
 
These briefings are part of his initial duties and his follow-up on the Arab issues on the League's agenda during the current period.
 
 
Meeting with Assistant Secretaries-General
 
Nabil Fahmy held a meeting with the Assistant Secretaries-General to discuss work priorities for the coming period.
 
The meeting addressed the methodology and workflow within the various sectors of the General Secretariat, ensuring the continued monitoring of Arab issues and enhancing the efficiency of institutional performance.
 
The Secretary-General signed his first official correspondence addressed to the leaders of Arab states, expressing his gratitude for the trust they placed in him.
 
He also signed letters addressed to the Arab foreign ministers, containing an assessment of the Arab situation and proposals to bolster the Arab world's and the Arab League's ability to confront existing challenges.
 
Nabil Fahmy's correspondence emphasized the importance of developing and reforming the Arab League to enhance its capacity to address regional and international changes.
 
The proposals also included supporting efforts toward economic and social development and enabling joint Arab action to respond to the priorities of Arab states and peoples.
