CAIRO – 21 June 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed Egypt’s full support for the nomination of Nabil Fahmy as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS), one day ahead of the Arab League Council meeting at the ministerial level in Amman.

President El-Sisi met separately on Sunday at the Presidential Palace with Fahmy, the designated Secretary-General of the Arab League, and outgoing Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

Arab foreign ministers are scheduled to meet in Amman on Monday to formally endorse Fahmy’s appointment as the new Secretary-General of the League, after which he will officially assume office on July 1, 2026.

During his meeting with Fahmy, President El-Sisi stressed that the region is facing unprecedented challenges that require strengthening joint Arab action and enhancing the role of the League of Arab States as the primary framework for defending the interests of Arab countries and peoples.

For his part, Fahmy expressed his appreciation for the President’s support and affirmed his commitment to developing the League’s performance and formulating a more effective strategic vision that reflects the magnitude of the challenges facing Arab national security. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening the League’s role in the economic and social spheres to help achieve its broader objectives.

According to the Presidency’s official spokesperson, President El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to playing a constructive role in advancing peaceful solutions to regional crises. He pointed to the growing number of conflict zones and increasing violations of international law, warning that they pose serious threats to Arab national security and place greater responsibilities on the League of Arab States.

The President stressed the need to develop the League’s mechanisms for addressing regional transformations and formulating more effective and comprehensive collective Arab positions.

Additionally, President El-Sisi met with Aboul Gheit ahead of the conclusion of his term as Secretary-General of the League. The President expressed his appreciation for Aboul Gheit’s efforts to strengthen joint Arab action and enhance the work of the League’s General Secretariat throughout his tenure.

El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to continuing its support for the League as the principal framework for defending Arab interests and promoting cooperation among member states in pursuit of prosperity and development for the Arab peoples.

For his part, Aboul Gheit expressed his gratitude for President El-Sisi’s continued support for the League of Arab States and his commitment to safeguarding Arab national security and defending Arab interests.

He praised Egypt’s support for the League’s role as a key platform for strengthening Arab relations and advancing common interests. Aboul Gheit also expressed pride in having worked closely with President El-Sisi and Arab leaders during a period marked by unprecedented challenges to Arab national security and regional stability.

The meeting also reviewed a number of challenges facing the Arab security system, underscoring the need for greater cooperation, coordination, and solidarity among Arab states to navigate the current critical phase and build a more stable future for the region.

On March 29, 2026, Arab foreign ministers unanimously endorsed Egypt’s nomination of veteran diplomat Nabil Fahmy for the post of Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, succeeding Ahmed Aboul Gheit. The recommendation was made during the Arab League Council’s 165th regular ministerial session, which focused heavily on regional developments, particularly recent Iranian attacks on several Arab countries.

Fahmy is widely regarded as one of Egypt’s most prominent diplomats, combining decades of practical diplomatic experience with academic expertise in international relations. The 75-year-old diplomat is the son of former Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmy, a background that helped shape his early understanding of diplomacy and international affairs.
