EVIAN – 17 June 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and US President Donald Trump held wide-ranging talks addressing the recently-announced Iran agreement, the Palestinian cause, the Nile file, and the strategic bilateral ties.
The remarks came during a meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in the French city of Évian, according to the Egyptian Presidency.
El-Sisi: Egypt-US partnership key pillar of regional peace
El-Sisi congratulated Trump ahead of the upcoming 250th anniversary of US independence and reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to further strengthening the two countries’ strategic partnership across various fields.
El-Sisi said the enduring relationship between Cairo and Washington remains a key pillar of regional peace and stability.
Trump, in turn, welcomed Egypt's commitment to advancing the partnership and expressed his country's interest in further deepening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in a wide range of areas.
The two leaders also agreed to intensify political consultations and coordination on various issues in support of peace and prosperity across the region.
Trump signals fresh push to resolve GERD dispute in meeting with El-Sisi
During the meeting, Trump said he will revisit the dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), saying the project is causing "tremendous problems for Egypt."
"We'll be discussing the Nile because the Nile is getting a little emptier than it should be, and that's what we're here to talk about," Trump said.
"A dam was built in Ethiopia and it's causing tremendous problems for Egypt and I'm very aware."
Trump said he had previously secured a deal on the dispute during his first term before elections were held and “somebody came in and they didn’t know much about that. They were not going to settle anything.”
"I had that deal settled," he said.
"But we'll get back into it. We'll see if we can settle it up," Trump said.
El-Sisi stressed to Trump the paramount importance of the Nile River as a matter of Egypt's national security, according to the Presidency. He also expressed appreciation for Trump's interest in the issue, which he emphasized as pivotal for Egypt.
Trump, for his part, said he understands all of Egypt's concerns regarding the matter and stressed that he would give the issue the highest priority in order to reach a fair settlement.
Trump praises Egypt’s role in supporting regional de-escalation
El-Sisi congratulated Trump on the success of efforts to reach an agreement with Iran, stressing the importance of the deal paving the way toward ending the war and achieving de-escalation in the Middle East.
El-Sisi also said Egypt is prepared to exert all efforts, in coordination with regional and international partners, to support such initiatives and help reach sustainable solutions to outstanding regional issues.
Trump, in turn, praised Egypt’s pivotal role and President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s personal efforts in supporting negotiations and de-escalation in the Middle East.
The US president voiced his keenness for continued close coordination between Cairo and Washington to support regional peace and stability.
El-Sisi to Trump: Palestinian cause settlement essential to lasting peace
El-Sisi stressed to Trump that resolving the Palestinian cause remains essential to achieving permanent peace and stability in the Middle East.
The Egyptian leader expressed hope that the coming period would witness concerted efforts to resolve conflicts across the Middle East, foremost among them the Palestinian cause.
El-Sisi also reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to continued coordination with the US to advance the implementation of all components of Trump's peace plan for the Gaza Strip, as well as efforts aimed at restoring calm and stability across the region.
