CAIRO – 6 June 2026: Egypt on Saturday strongly condemned an Israeli strike that killed two Lebanese army officers and a soldier in southern Lebanon, calling the attack a “dangerous escalation and a blatant violation of Lebanese sovereignty.”

In a statement, Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the strike constituted a clear breach of international law and international humanitarian law.

Egypt called on the international community to take responsibility for halting repeated Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory and ensuring Israel's respect for Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It warned that continued escalation would lead to further tension, instability and disorder across the region.

Egypt stressed the importance of supporting intensified regional and international diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and prevent the conflict from widening, in order to bolster regional security and stability.

Deadly Israeli Strike

The Lebanese army said an “aggressive and barbaric” Israeli strike targeted a military vehicle on the Kfar Tebnit-Khardali road in Nabatieh city, killing a brigadier general, a captain and a soldier.

The Lebanese army denounced the “brutal, deliberate and repeated Israeli aggression against Lebanon, its people and its army.”

It warned that the Israeli aggression is aimed at “undermining all efforts to reach a solution that would restore stability, establish a comprehensive ceasefire, and secure Israel's withdrawal from occupied Lebanese territory.”

The Israeli military said it is investigating the incident, claiming that the vehicle had been targeted after being identified as a threat to Israeli forces.

The Lebanese president and Hezbollah also condemned the strike.

The attack today comes although the Lebanese army has largely remained outside direct hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

The Israeli war on Hezbollah erupted amid the Gaza war that started in 2023, later expanding into a broader conflict that led to heavy casualties and widespread destruction in parts of Lebanon.

Although a US-mediated ceasefire took effect in late 2024, cross-border violence and Israeli strikes have continued.

Hostilities escalated again earlier this year in coincidence with the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran late in February, raising concerns over renewed instability along the frontier.

In its statement, Egypt reiterated its support for Lebanon's sovereignty, territorial integrity and state institutions, and called for Israel's immediate and full withdrawal from all Lebanese territory.

It also urged the full and non-selective implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, in a manner that ensures security and stability and preserves Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
