CAIRO – 4 June 2026: Egypt looks to enhance cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to develop Cairo International Airport and Cairo Metro line four, the foreign minister said on Thursday.
The planned development would support the growing influx of tourists to Egypt, Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty told JICA President Akihiko Tanaka during a meeting in Tokyo, the ministry said in a statement.
The meeting discussed enhancing ongoing development cooperation between the two sides on priority sectors, especially education, transportation and private sector financing.
The minister expressed appreciation for the close cooperation with JICA under the Egypt-Japan Education Partnership initiative, praising the tangible results achieved through joint education projects.
He also stressed the importance of continuing cooperation to strengthen the regional standing of the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) and enhance its academic and research role.
Abdeltty called for expanding E-JUST’s partnerships with Arab and African universities and supporting its efforts to train and develop African professionals under the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) framework.
The minister also welcomed the agency’s readiness to enhance trilateral cooperation with the Egyptian Anti-Corruption Academy.
He stressed the importance of expanding this partnership to include long-term institutional support programs that would bolster the academy’s regional role in cybersecurity, combating organized crime and promoting institutional governance.
On private-sector investment financing, Abdelatty underscored the importance of strengthening JICA’s role in supporting private investment in Egypt, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises and renewable energy projects, in line with the country’s priorities for promoting sustainable economic growth.
The two sides reaffirmed the importance of continued coordination and joint efforts to advance the Egypt-Japan partnership and build on achievements made in recent years.
