Egypt offers condolences to China over deadly coal mine blast in Shanxi

CAIRO – 24 May 2026: Egypt expressed its condolences to China on Saturday following a coal mine explosion in Shanxi province that killed dozens of people and injured many others.

Chinese authorities said the death toll from the explosion, described as the country’s worst mining disaster in nearly two decades, rose to 82.

Guo Xiaofang, the head of Shanxi's Qinyuan county, said two people remained missing, while 128 were hospitalized with injuries and 35 were unharmed, Reuters reported.

In a statement, the Egyptian foreign ministry conveyed its “sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy” to the government and people of China over the victims of the blast.

Egypt affirmed its full solidarity with Beijing in the aftermath of the tragedy, wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.
