CAIRO – 23 May 2026: The fourth phase of the presidential initiative, 100 Million Trees, which included the planting, supply, and afforestation of more than 200,000 trees across several governorates and along the Ring Road surrounding Greater Cairo has completed, anounced Minister of Environment and Local Development Manal Awad in a statement on Saturday.
The initiative comes in line with directives from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to expand green spaces, improve environmental conditions, and enhance citizens’ quality of life.
According to the minister, the fourth phase contributed to expanding afforestation efforts along major roads and in urban areas, helping improve air quality, reduce temperatures, and enhance the overall urban landscape.
In this context, Dr. Awad reviewed a report submitted by Saeed Helmy Abdel-Khaleq regarding the implementation status of the phase. The report indicated that approximately 75,692 trees were supplied and planted across seven governorates:Fayoum, Dakahlia, Alexandria, Suez, Sharqia, Red Sea Governorate, and Qena.
The minister emphasized that the “100 Million Trees” initiative is one of Egypt’s most important national environmental projects, supporting the transition toward a healthier and more sustainable environment. She explained that increasing vegetation cover contributes directly to improving air quality, reducing pollution and temperatures, and enhancing the appearance of streets, roads, and public spaces.
Dr. Awad added that citizens are already benefiting from the initiative through improved environmental conditions within cities, increased green spaces in residential neighborhoods, and expanded tree coverage along roads and major thoroughfares. She noted that the initiative also supports Egypt’s broader efforts to combat climate change and achieve sustainable development goals.
For his part, Dr. Abdel-Khaleq explained that the fourth phase also included extensive integrated afforestation projects. These included supplying 25,000 trees to subsidiaries of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater for planting at wastewater treatment facilities across various governorates.
In addition, 100,000 trees were distributed to 16 governorates for planting at youth centers, health directorates, education directorates, and within community initiatives and development projects.
He further noted that the initiative expanded to include tree planting along both sides and median strips of the Ring Road around Greater Cairo, in coordination with the General Authority for Roads and Bridges under the Ministry of Transport. Afforestation efforts covered several key sections, including the Madkour Triangle area after the Al-Moshir Bridge toward El-Mounib, as well as the section near the treatment plant close to the Mercedes Bridge.
According to Abdel-Khaleq, tree species selected for the project were specifically chosen to withstand highway conditions and local environmental factors.
He also stressed that the ministry is continuously monitoring implementation in coordination with governorates through a modern digital tracking and monitoring system that documents tree locations and growth rates. The system is intended to ensure sustainability, facilitate maintenance, and maximize the project’s environmental and developmental impact.
The report also reviewed the implementation status of the initiative’s four phases during the current fiscal year. The first phase included contracts for planting 5 million trees with participation from all governorates, followed by a second phase involving 2 million trees. The third phase covered the planting of 452,000 trees in Cairo, Giza, and Qalyubia, while the fourth phase represented a major expansion in afforestation efforts and green space development.
In closing, Dr. Manal Awad affirmed that the Ministry of Local Development and Environment will continue implementing the presidential initiative in coordination with all relevant authorities to achieve its environmental and climate objectives and support Egypt’s vision for more sustainable cities and an improved quality of life nationwide.
