CAIRO – 18 May 2026: The Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah) concluded its eighth General Conference on Monday. The conference was held simultaneously in Ramallah, Gaza, Cairo, and Beirut under the slogan, “A Renewed Beginning: Steadfastness, Freedom, and Independence,” coinciding with the 78th anniversary of the Nakba.
The conference unanimously renewed its confidence in Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as head of the movement. It also elected a new Central Committee and Revolutionary Council and adopted a number of internal resolutions aimed at strengthening the role of youth and women in decision-making.
The conference’s final statement expressed gratitude to Egypt, under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and to Jordan’s King Abdullah II for their decisive stance against the displacement of the Palestinian people. Special thanks were also extended to Egypt and Lebanon for the support and facilities they provided to ensure the conference’s success.
The final statement emphasized that “there can be no state without Gaza, nor a state in Gaza,” stressing that any international action must ensure an end to the aggression, the termination of the Israeli occupation, and full integration under the Palestinian government.
The statement also affirmed the movement’s commitment to implementing all necessary reforms to provide the best possible services to the Palestinian people, while emphasizing its adherence to peaceful popular resistance.
The conference commended diplomatic and legal efforts in international courts, citing the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion on the illegality of the occupation and the New York Declaration, achieved through Saudi-French efforts, which strengthened international recognition of the State of Palestine.
The movement reiterated its demands for the implementation of relevant UN resolutions, particularly Resolution 2803 of 2025 concerning Gaza and Resolution 2334 of 2016 regarding the cessation of settlement activities.
The statement also addressed the existential challenges posed by the occupation, including the expansion of settlements, organized settler violence, the ongoing aggression against northern refugee camps in Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nur Shams, and the withholding of Palestinian tax revenues.
The final statement announced the names of those elected to the Fatah Central Committee, headed by imprisoned Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, followed by Palestinian General Intelligence Chief Maj. Gen. Majid Faraj, Lt. Gen. Jibril Rajoub, Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh, and Ramallah Governor Dr. Laila Ghannam.
The list of winners also included prominent Fatah leader Mahmoud al-Aloul, former Palestinian General Intelligence Chief Maj. Gen.
