CAIRO - 12 May 2026: Head of the Climate Information Center at the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Dr. Mohamed Ali Fahim, confirmed Tuesday that the country has entered a completely different climatic phase, characterized by record-breaking high temperatures and increased solar intensity.

This necessitates strict preventative measures to protect public health and avoid the risks of heat stress or sunstroke that may result from these sudden and severe changes in the climate system.

About this heatwave

Dr. Fahim explained that the danger of this heatwave lies not only in the high recorded temperatures, but also in the increased heat energy associated with high solar radiation, resulting from the sun's approach to the Tropic of Cancer.

He pointed out that this effect makes the heat feel much more intense for humans, plants, and animals compared to the same temperatures in other months.

Based on data from the Meteorological Authority, Greater Cairo and the Nile Delta are expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius, while temperatures will rise to 41 degrees in Upper Egypt and 42 degrees in southern Upper Egypt.

Winds are expected to be active, with speeds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h, which may reduce horizontal visibility on highways.

Heat Stress Prevention Guidelines

The Head of the Climate Information Center stressed the importance of drinking plenty of water throughout the day, without waiting to feel thirsty, to ensure the body is hydrated and maintains its physiological balance in the face of high temperatures.

He also emphasized the importance of avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, specifically between noon and 4:00 PM, when solar radiation is at its strongest and most harmful to the body.

Safety Guidelines

As part of his advice to citizens, Fahim stressed the importance of wearing appropriate head coverings and light-colored, lightweight cotton clothing that reflects sunlight and does not absorb heat.

He also warned against leaving children or the elderly in enclosed spaces or parked cars, as this poses a direct threat to their lives due to the sharp and rapid rise in temperatures within these confined and enclosed areas.

Preventive Measures for Sensitive Groups

The center's director also offered specific advice to allergy and sinusitis sufferers, urging them to take precautions and wear medical masks, especially in areas experiencing sandstorms and dust.

This is to avoid any health complications resulting from the weather changes associated with these heat waves.

He emphasized that awareness of these precautions and their strict implementation represent the first line of defense against climate-related health risks during this period.
