CAIRO - 8 May 2026: US President Donald Trump said on Friday that ceasefire negotiations between Washington and Tehran are still ongoing, despite the recent exchange of fire between the two sides.

In a press statement to ABC News, Trump added that drones approaching US destroyers near the Strait of Hormuz were targeted and completely destroyed.

Trump said the attacks also destroyed small boats used by the Iranians to compensate for their navy, which he described as being “completely crippled.”

The US president denied that the destroyers sustained any damage after being targeted by Iran and expressed appreciation for their successful transit through the Strait of Hormuz under Iranian fire.

Trump described the targeting of various Iranian cities, including Bandar Abbas, as a “light blow” to the Islamic Republic.

A series of sporadic clashes broke out earlier on Thursday between US Navy ships and Iranian forces near the Strait of Hormuz.
