CAIRO - 7 May 2026: The Ministry of Labor announced that Thursday, May 7, 2026, will be an official paid holiday for private sector employees on the occasion of Labor Day, instead of Friday, May 1, 2026.

Labor Day Holiday

The decision includes employees covered by the provisions of Labor Law No. 14 of 2025. Employees are entitled to a paid holiday on this day.

Employers may require employees to work if work circumstances necessitate it. In this case, the employee is entitled to double pay for that day, or to another day off in lieu of it, upon written request.

The Ministry of Labor's decision is in line with Prime Ministerial Decree No. 1265 of 2026, which stipulated that the holiday be unified on Thursday, May 7, for all employees in ministries, government departments, public authorities, local government units, public sector and public business sector companies, as well as the private sector.

The decision was also based on Article (129) of the Labor Law, and the Minister of Labor’s Decision No. 294 of 2025 regarding the regulation of official holidays, which allows for the replacement of holiday days with other dates to unify them at the national level.

The Ministry issued a circular to the directorates in all governorates to start implementing the decision and publishing it in work and production sites.
