CAIRO – 3 May 2026: Cairo and Damascus discussed bilateral relations, regional developments and the situation in Syria, including Israeli violations of Syrian sovereignty, during ministerial talks on Sunday.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem received Syria’s Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Minister of Economy and Industry Nidal al-Shaar in Cairo.

Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s firm rejection of Israel’s violations of Syrian sovereignty, reiterating Cairo’s condemnation of such actions.
He also rejected attempts by Israeli forces to exploit the situation in Syria to occupy more territory and undermine its security and stability.
Abdelatty called on Israel to adhere to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, reaffirming Egypt’s longstanding position in support of ending Israel’s occupation of the Syrian Golan.
Egypt reaffirmed its support for the legitimate aspirations of all components of the Syrian people, stressing full respect for Syria’s sovereignty, unity, stability and territorial integrity.
Abdelatty also underscored the importance of preserving Syrian state institutions and rejecting any foreign interference in its internal affairs, in a way that meets the Syrian people’s aspirations for comprehensive internal stability.

Meanwhile, he stressed the need for coordinated efforts to combat terrorism and extremism in all forms, address the issue of foreign fighters, and ensure that Syria serves as a source of stability.
Egypt-Syria Ties
Abdelatty highlighted the deep historical, popular and cultural ties binding Egypt and Syria, noting that this shared legacy reflects the longstanding alignment between the two peoples.
He added that Egypt’s position on the Syrian crisis has, since its onset, been based on clear principles aimed at restoring security and stability, preserving Syria’s unity and safeguarding its national cohesion.
Regional Developments
The talks also addressed rapidly evolving regional developments, including the course of negotiations between the United States and Iran and efforts to de-escalate tensions.
The ministers also exchanged views on developments in Lebanon.
Abdelatty stressed the need for coordinated regional and international efforts to prevent the region from sliding into wider conflicts and to ensure regional security and stability.
