CAIRO – 1 May 2026: Cairo and Washington addressed the latest developments in the US-Iran negotiations to end the war in light of the latest revised Iranian proposal.
In a phone call with US Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff on Friday, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Abdelatty called for intensified efforts to support the US-Iran negotiation track, the ministry said in a statement.
The foreign minister affirmed the need for reaching a political settlement away from the specter of war.
Abdelatty stressed the importance of adhering to a diplomatic approach and continuing efforts to reach understandings among the parties concerned, sustain the ceasefire, end the war, and ease regional tensions.
For his part, Witkoff commended Egypt’s role in supporting efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.
Iranian state media said Tehran submitted a new proposal via mediator Pakistan late on Thursday to be relayed to Washington though details were not disclosed.
The move marks the latest attempt to end the war with the US, which started on February 28 with US-Israeli strikes and is currently paused by a ceasefire to give the space for talks.
US President Donald Trump said he is “not satisfied” with the offer, telling reporters that options remained “either blast them away or make a deal.”
“They want to make a deal, I’m not satisfied with it, so we’ll see what happen,” Trump told reporters Friday at the White House.
He did not specify the proposal’s shortcomings but added that the Iranians are “asking for things I can’t agree to.”
Earlier this week, Trump rejected an Iranian proposal on reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, lifting the naval blockade on its ports, and ending the war, while delaying nuclear talks, according to US media.
He said the US will maintain its naval blockade on Iranian ports until Tehran agrees to a deal addressing Washington’s nuclear concerns.
“Iran has just informed us that they are in a ‘state of collapse.’ They want us to ‘open the Hormuz Strait’ as soon as possible, as they try to figure out their leadership situation (which I believe they will be able to do!),” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday.
