CAIRO – 28 April 2026: Tarek El-Gowaily, Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels, confirmed the completion of work on the first tunnel boring machine for the Metro Line 4 project. He indicated that the project is proceeding according to schedule, with the first phase set to open in mid-2028.
In televised remarks, El-Gowaily stated that the Authority celebrated the extraction of the first machine out of six dedicated to the construction of Line 4. He explained that four machines have already begun operations, and the first has now successfully completed all assigned tasks.
El-Gowaily added that three machines are currently active on-site. Another machine is scheduled for removal by mid-June upon completion of its segment, followed by the machine operated by the Arab Contractors Company, which is expected to finish drilling operations by mid-August.
Chairman of the National Authority for Tunnels explained that the first phase of the tunneling project begins in the Hadayek El-Ashgar area of 6th of October City. It passes through Pyramids Gardens, Nasr Station, the Grand Egyptian Museum, and Shooting Range Square. The project aims to serve the Giza Pyramids area and integrate it into the modern public transportation network.
El-Gowaily indicated that following the completion of the first 6.5-kilometer section, internal preparation of the tunnels will begin. This phase includes the installation of signaling and electrical cables, as well as operational testing for the trains.
The opening of the first phase of Metro Line 4, which extends from Hadayek El-Ashgar to the Fustat area, remains on track for mid-2028.
