CAIRO - 28 April 2026: President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi inspected construction at Al-Ahramat station Tuesday, marking progress on the first phase of Metro Line 4.

Accompanied by Prime Miniater Mostafa Madbouly and Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir, Sisi directed officials to maintain high safety standards and strict timelines.

He emphasized the necessity of linking densely populated districts to Egypt’s expanding green transport network.

Sisi inaugurated the completion of a 6.35-kilometer tunnel section between Ashgar Village and Al-Ahramat stations by pressing the start button on the tunnel boring machine.

During the tour, Transport Minister Wazir briefed the president on the installation of concrete panels, rails, and signaling systems.

The 2028-bound first phase will connect 6th of October City to New Cairo, passing through Giza, Haram, and Nasr City.

The line is expected to transport two million passengers daily and will integrate with the 6th of October monorail.

The visit was attended by Japanese Ambassador Fumio Iwai and representatives of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), highlighting the international cooperation behind the project.

Per an agreement signed by Egypt and JICA in September 2025, a Japanese Official Development Assistance loan is offered with an annual interest rate of 0.75 percent, a repayment period of 40 years, and a 10-year grace period.

The National Authority for Tunnels acts as the executing agency, with procurement tied to Japanese systems. Under the Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP), Japanese technology and rolling stock will be introduced to the line, enhancing visibility for Japanese expertise while supporting Egypt’s infrastructure development.
