CAIRO - 23 April 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi laid a wreath on Thursday at the Armed Forces Martyrs Memorial and the tomb of late President Anwar Sadat, marking the 44th anniversary of Sinai liberation.
Upon his arrival at the memorial site, El-Sisi, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, was received by Minister of Defense and Military Production and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Lieutenant General Ashraf Salem Zaher, along with Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Lieutenant General Ahmed Khalifa.
The honor guard rendered the salute and the national anthem was played.

El-Sisi laid a wreath at the Unknown Soldier Memorial, where the “Martyr’s Salute” was performed, before proceeding to El-Sadat’s tomb to lay a wreath and recite Al-Fatiha.
The ceremony was attended by senior military commanders, as well as top state officials, including Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed El-Tayeb, and Head of the Coptic Orthodox Church Pope Tawadros II, alongside parliamentary leaders and cabinet members.

Sinai Liberation Day is a public holiday in Egypt observed annually on April 25, marking Israel’s withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula in 1982 and the restoration of Egyptian sovereignty under the 1979 peace treaty.
Meanwhile, Taba, the last remaining area of the peninsula, returned to Egypt in 1988 following international arbitration.
