CAIRO – 22 April 2026: Sheikh Issa al-Kharrafin, head of the Sinai Tribes, stated on Wednesday that the Sinai is undergoing an unprecedented developmental and urban renaissance, fueled by a series of major national projects.

He affirmed that Sinai serves as Egypt’s eastern gateway, noting that throughout history, invasions have traditionally targeted this strategic entrance. This geographic importance has made the region vulnerable to successive conflicts over the last century, most recently the wave of terrorism that claimed thousands of martyrs and left many others wounded.

In televised remarks, the Sheikh explained that many tribesmen sacrificed their lives in the fight against terrorism, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Egyptian Armed Forces to defend Sinai and safeguard national security. He emphasized that these sacrifices remain a defining chapter in the nation’s history.

Al-Kharrafin highlighted that the current urban and developmental leap is the result of strategic national initiatives, most notably the Al-Mahsama Canal project. He also referenced the Al-Salam Canal, which was established during the era of the late President Hosni Mubarak, as a foundational step.

He further explained that the Al-Mahsama Canal project aims to reclaim and cultivate approximately 400,000 feddans, representing a significant breakthrough for Egyptian agriculture and regional development.

Emphasizing that the scale of development achieved in Sinai has exceeded all expectations, the Sheikh called on Egyptians to move to Sinai and invest in land to foster further stability. He stressed the strategic necessity of having at least 4 million citizens residing in central Sinai in the coming period.

Concluding his remarks, Sheikh Issa al-Kharrafin delivered a message to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on behalf of the Sinai tribal leaders, reaffirming their loyalty and steadfast support for the President’s leadership and national decisions.
