WASHINGTON – 18 April 2026: The war in Iran could resume within days if negotiations between Tehran and Washington fail to produce a breakthrough, Axios reported Saturday, citing a US official.

The report comes as US President Donald Trump said there are “no sticking points at all” in the ongoing talks with Iran, while signs of persistent escalation continue to emerge.

Trump asserted on Friday that the US would work with Iran to recover enriched uranium from Iranian territory and transfer it to the US.

However, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei rejected the idea, saying “enriched uranium is as sacred to us as Iranian soil” and “will not be transferred anywhere.”

In a further escalation, Iran’s military announced today it is closing the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway through which about a fifth of global oil supplies pass, in response to the US blockade targeting Iranian shipping and ports.

Speaking at a White House event on Saturday, Trump confirmed that talks with Iran are ongoing but warned that “they can’t blackmail us” over the strait.
