Egypt warns of waning global focus on Gaza amid regional escalation

WASHINGTON – 16 April 2026: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty warned on Wednesday of the risks of declining international attention on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, amid ongoing regional escalation.

Speaking at a high-level panel discussion on the Palestinian cause held at the World Bank headquarters, Abdelatty said the current regional tensions underscore the need to refocus attention on the worsening humanitarian conditions in the enclave.

He strssed the importance of coordinated efforts to de-escalate regional tensions given their direct impact on developments in Gaza, the ministry said in a statement.

Abdelatty also highlighted the importance of enabling the national committee tasked with administering Gaza to begin operating from within the territory, enhancing its ability to manage day-to-day affairs as a step toward the full return of the Palestinian Authority.

He further stressed the need for the swift deployment of an international stabilization force.

Meanwhile, the minister called for better coordination of bilateral and multilateral initiatives, with a focus on projects that can deliver rapid and tangible impact on the ground.

These include the provision of medicines, construction materials, desalination plants, mobile power stations, and temporary housing.

Such efforts, he said, would help make Gaza more livable during the transitional phase, taking into account the realities on the ground.

Abdelatty also underscored the vital role played by national Red Crescent and Red Cross societies, particularly the Egyptian Red Crescent, noting that their work has extended beyond traditional humanitarian assistance to include early recovery efforts.

He stressed the importance of supporting and building on these roles.
