Smart drone-based weather monitoring system debuts in Egypt

CAIRO - 15 April 2026: A smart weather monitoring system using drones will be effective after a cooperation agreement has been signed Wednesday in line with the state's commitment to employing the  latest digital and modern technologies. 
 
This morning, Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Environment, witnessed the signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement between the Ministry and a private company specializing in drone solutions and services.
 
The agreement aims to operate and establish a smart weather monitoring system using drones supported by artificial intelligence and geospatial analysis technologies.
 
This comes in line with the directives of the political leadership and the state's commitment to strengthening local, environmental, and urban governance tools, and employing the latest digital and modern technologies to support the local administration system in the governorates.
 
The agreement was signed by Dr. Saeed Helmy Abdel-Khaleq, Head of the Integrated Local Planning and Development Sector and General Supervisor of the project, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company, in the presence of several leaders from both sides.
 
 
Real-Time Field Monitoring and Analysis
 
Dr. Manal Awad indicated that the contract aims to establish an integrated system for real-time field monitoring and analysis.
 
This system will support and enhance the efficiency of environmental, urban, and local oversight in certain service sectors that directly impact citizens' daily lives, thereby improving their well-being. It will also strengthen decision-making based on accurate and immediate data, contributing to improved field performance across all governorates.
 
 
Combating Building Violations
 
The Minister of Local Development and Environment added that the system's scope of work encompasses several strategic areas.
 
These include supporting urban planning and combating building violations, monitoring waste management and the black cloud phenomenon, tracking encroachments on nature reserves, and supporting afforestation efforts within the presidential initiative to plant 100 million trees.
 
Furthermore, it includes environmental inspections, urban monitoring of public facilities and services, and support for crisis and emergency management through real-time monitoring, safe waste disposal, and the use of spectral imaging techniques to analyze and track pollution sources with advanced scientific precision.
 
 
A qualitative leap in the regulatory work system
 
Dr. Manal Awad confirmed that this project represents a qualitative leap in the regulatory work system, and embodies the state's orientation towards digital transformation and maximizing the benefit from modern technology in raising the efficiency of government performance and achieving the goals of Egypt Vision 2030.
