BEIRUT – 9 April 2026: Israeli airstrikes on densely populated areas across Lebanon since early on Wednesday have killed at least 254 and injured 1,165 more, with most casualties in the capital, Beirut.
Lebanon’s Civil Defense Directorate reported the casualties on Wednesday in Beirut and its southern suburbs (Dahieh); Baalbek and Hermel in the east; Nabatieh, Sidon, and Sour in the south; and Aley in Mount Lebanon.
Israel carried out its heaviest strikes on Lebanon since the war with Hezbollah broke out last month in conjunction with the US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said a ceasefire in Lebanon was an essential part of the US-Iran two-week ceasefire agreement reached early on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday said Lebanon was not part of the ceasefire with Iran and vowed to continue striking Hezbollah with force.
Vice President JD Vance also denied that Lebanon was part of the deal.
Hezbollah announced resuming attacks on Israel “until the Israeli-American aggression against our country and our people ceases,” firing rockets at the small kibbutz of Manara early on Thursday.
“The scale of the killing and destruction in Lebanon today is nothing short of horrific,” UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk, adding that “such carnage, within hours of agreeing to a ceasefire with Iran, defies belief.”
