CAIRO – 2 April 2026: Dr. Iman Shaker, Director of the Remote Sensing Center at the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA), has revealed the causes behind the severe dust storm that unexpectedly struck the country, occurring despite heavy rainfall in several governorates over the past few hours.

In a statement on Al-Hayat TV, Dr. Shaker explained that the dust storm caused horizontal visibility to drop to near-zero levels, falling below 500 meters in some areas. She attributed the unusual coincidence of rainfall and dust to a desert depression moving from Libya toward Egypt's Western Desert, which converged with a hot air mass.

Regarding the forecast for the coming days, Dr. Shaker warned of another incoming dust storm from Libya. However, she noted it would be significantly less severe than the current one and is not expected to impact visibility to the same degree. She also predicted very light rain in Greater Cairo, with light to moderate showers in the southern parts of the country.

Dr. Shaker ruled out the possibility of heavy rainfall in the coming days. She promised a noticeable improvement in weather conditions, with complete stability expected to begin on Friday evening and continue through the end of next week. The northern coasts may experience light, non-impactful rain by the middle of next week.
