Less intense rain is expected - file
CAIRO - 26 March 2026: Dr. Manar Ghanem, a member of the Media Center at the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, revealed details of the severe weather instability that affected the country in the recent hours.
She confirmed that the governorates experienced the peak of the weather fluctuations, which followed a prolonged period of relative dryness at the beginning of spring.
During a televised interview, Dr. Ghanem explained that the weather conditions resulted from a deep upper-level low-pressure system of polar origin, coinciding with a surface low over the Mediterranean Sea. This led to varying intensities of rainfall across most of the country.
She noted that the rain reached heavy levels with thunderstorms in coastal areas, while it was moderate to heavy in Greater Cairo, the Nile Delta governorates, the Suez Canal cities, and northern Upper Egypt. Lighter rainfall extended to parts of central and southern Upper Egypt.
She pointed out that the most prominent factor, besides the rain, was the noticeable drop in temperatures, resulting in cool winter weather during the day and cold to very cold weather at night.
Upper Egypt governorates also experienced strong winds carrying sand and dust, reaching storm force in some areas, which led to a significant decrease in horizontal visibility.
Less intense rain expected
The authorities reassured citizens that the severity of the weather conditions would gradually subside, revealing that while there would still be a chance of rain, it would be much less intense than on Wednesday.
Moderate rain was expected along the northern coast and northern Lower Egypt, and light rain was forecast for Greater Cairo and southern Lower Egypt.
Dust-laden winds (30 to 50 km/h) would continue, particularly in Upper Egypt and the Red Sea governorates.
Beginning of weather improvement
The authorities confirmed that Friday would mark the beginning of a complete improvement and stabilization of weather conditions, with a slight and gradual rise in temperatures.
They issued an urgent appeal to citizens to exercise caution in the coming hours, especially drivers on highways, due to the possibility of rainwater accumulation in some areas and reduced horizontal visibility caused by dust in desert and open areas.
They emphasized that coordination was ongoing between the authorities and crisis management centers in all governorates to address any emergencies.
