CAIRO – 23 March 2026: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that Washington and Tehran had held “constructive” talks over the past two days in an effort to reach a comprehensive solution to the ongoing war.

He stated that he would postpone military strikes against Iranian power plants for five days.

“Based on the tenor and tone of these in-depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, which will continue throughout the week, I have instructed the Department of Defense to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five-day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Tasnim News Agency quoted a security official commenting on President Trump's statements. The official suggested that the five-day deadline indicated Trump was still pursuing his original military plan and asserted that Iran would continue to respond and defend the country with full force.

The official added that Trump had only backed down after Iranian military threats became credible, warning that the Strait of Hormuz would not return to its previous state, nor would energy markets stabilize in the near future.

The Iranian official denied that any direct negotiations were underway. “We have only received messages through intermediaries since the beginning of the conflict, and we have responded that we will continue to defend ourselves until we achieve deterrence,” the official stated.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry also denied that talks were taking place between Tehran and Washington. The ministry claimed that Trump's remarks were part of an attempt to lower energy prices and “buy time” to implement his military objectives. While noting that there are initiatives from regional countries to reduce tensions, Tehran maintained: “We are not the party that started this war.”
