Oil tankers transit near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global energy shipments, as talks with Tokyo are reported.
CAIRO - 21 MARCH 2026: Iran’s foreign minister has started talks with Japan on the possibility of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Japanese media reported, as the war keeps rattling energy markets and disrupting shipping in one of the world’s most important oil routes.
In an interview with Kyodo News, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is ready to allow Japan-related vessels to pass through the strait, and that discussions with Tokyo are underway on the issue.
The Reuters report, citing Kyodo, said Japan relies on the Strait of Hormuz for about 90% of its oil imports, making any disruption a direct concern for Tokyo.
The development comes as Washington has been pressing allies to help secure passage through Hormuz, while Japan has highlighted legal limits on overseas military action under its constitution.
Oil prices have been swinging sharply as the conflict continues and shipping risks rise.
