BERLIN – 14 March 2026: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed that Germany is not part of the ongoing war in Iran, stressing that Berlin’s priority is to help end the conflict through diplomacy.
“Let me make this very clear once again: Germany is not part of this war, and we do not want to become part of it,” Merz said during a meeting with Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Friday.
He added that Berlin is discussing efforts to bring the war to an end with both the United States and the Israeli governments.
His remarks come while the US-Israeli war in Iran has reached its 14-day mark, killing hundreds of Iranians including children and other civilians, and displacing millions.
Iran’s retaliatory strikes targeting US military sites across the Middle East have also struck civilian areas in several Arab countries, killing dozens and raising fears of further regional instability.
The attacks have also disrupted oil production and shipping routes across the region, putting additional strain on global energy supplies.
Merz said the war has raised “major questions” about security, warning that it is already driving up energy costs and could potentially trigger large-scale migration.
