CAIRO - 12 MARCH 2026: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty spoke by phone with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday to review the fast-growing Egypt–China partnership and compare notes on a region under pressure, as both sides stressed the need to cool tensions and keep diplomacy moving.
According to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty conveyed President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s greetings to President Xi Jinping and described the relationship as a comprehensive strategic partnership that has gained clear momentum in recent years, helped by frequent high-level visits and expanding cooperation across sectors.
Both ministers also pointed to 2026 as the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Egypt and China, calling it a moment to build on what has already been achieved and push the partnership further.
Abdelatty praised Chinese investment and said Egypt wants more of it, especially in manufacturing, a direction Cairo has been pushing as it tries to localize production, move up industrial value chains and strengthen supply networks.
On the regional picture, both ministers stressed that continued military escalation risks undermining regional and international security, and agreed that the situation needs coordinated efforts, more diplomacy and urgent steps to prevent a wider conflict.
Abdelatty also reiterated Egypt’s stance condemning attacks that threaten the security and sovereignty of states in the region, and stressed the importance of protecting international maritime navigation, a point Cairo has been raising repeatedly as tensions affect trade routes and market confidence.
