CAIRO – 11 March 2026: Spain permanently withdrew its ambassador to Israel and formally ended the posting, Reuters reported on Wednesday, amid widening diplomatic rift between the two countries over Middle East tensions.

In a notice reportedly published in Spain’s official gazette on Tuesday, Madrid confirmed that the ambassador’s position in Tel Aviv had been terminated.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the embassy will now be headed by a chargé d’affaires for the foreseeable future.

The move comes amid Spain’s objection to hostile Israeli practices across the Middle East, especially the war in Gaza and the coordinated US-Israeli attacks on Iran, which triggered retaliatory strikes from Iran on neighboring Gulf nations.

With both embassies now led by chargés d’affaires rather than ambassadors, relations between Spain and Israel remain at a low point.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries had already been strained after Spain recognized a Palestinian state last year, prompting Israel to recall its ambassador from Madrid.
