CAIRO – 11 March 2026: The foreign ministers of Egypt and Portugal emphasized the importance of diplomacy as the only effective means to contain rising tensions in the Middle East and safeguard regional security.

In a phone call on Wednesday, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Portugal’s Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel discussed measures to de-escalate tensions and promote calm amid the ongoing regional developments.

Their conversation came as the US–Israeli war against Iran entered its 12th day, with American and Israeli forces conducting intense strikes on thousands of targets across Iranian territory.

In response, Tehran launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks, hitting US military positions as well as civilian facilities in several neighboring Arab countries.

During the call, Abdelatty stressed the need for coordinated regional and international efforts to reduce tensions and prioritize diplomatic and political solutions.

He warned that escalating military operations could threaten the security and stability of the entire region.

Abdelatty also reiterated Egypt’s condemnation of attacks on the sovereignty and security of Arab states.

Rangel, meanwhile, praised Cairo’s efforts to contain the escalation and highlighted Egypt’s role in evacuating Portuguese citizens stranded in the region via Egyptian territory.
