CAIRO - 21 February 2026: The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population issued a set of health guidelines for patients with respiratory illnesses during the holy month of Ramadan, as part of its efforts to promote safe fasting and maintain the stability of the health of those with chronic diseases.
Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the ministry's official spokesperson, confirmed that respiratory patients can fast safely in many cases, provided they adhere to medical instructions and follow a healthy lifestyle that reduces the risk of complications.
He advised them to avoid large meals at Iftar [The meal Muslims take to break their fast], as he explained that full stomach puts pressure on the diaphragm, which can increase shortness of breath, especially for patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
He also stressed the importance of staying hydrated by drinking warm fluids between Iftar and Suhoor to support respiratory function.
The spokesperson emphasized the necessity of using inhalers and prescribed medications as instructed by the treating physician, and not stopping or adjusting dosages without medical consultation, to ensure stable condition and avoid episodes of shortness of breath.
These recommendations are part of a broader awareness campaign launched by the ministry as Ramadan approaches, aimed at raising health awareness and enabling patients to fast safely while minimizing potential health risks.
