Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi meets with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Cairo, 8 Feb. 2026. Egyptian Presidency
CAIRO – 8 February 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Sunday reaffirmed Egypt’s rejection of any actions that could undermine Somalia’s stability and sovereignty in a meeting in Cairo with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
El-Sisi stressed Egypt’s recognition of independence for any part of its territory, describing such move as a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter and international law.
The Egyptian president emphasized that such recognition would set a “dangerous precedent that threatens the stability of the entire Horn of Africa.”
El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s firm support for Somalia’s unity, security, and territorial integrity and rejection of any measures compromising Somalia’s sovereignty and stability.
In December, Israel became the first country to formally recognise self-declared Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, dismissing Somalia’s longstanding rejection of secession.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of the central government but has not been internationally recognised and is considered by Mogadishu and the international community as part of Somalia.
The African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and many Arab and regional countries have condemned the move.
Egypt and 20 other countries issued a joint statement, alongside the OIC to warn against the move’s “serious repercussions” on peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea as well as its potential effects on international stability.
