CAIRO – 29 January 2026: Egypt is strictly adhering to a “one Palestinian out, one Palestinian in” policy at the Rafah border crossing with Gaza, journalist and analyst Osama Al-Dalil said.
The crossing, historically a vital gateway for Gaza residents seeking medical treatment and travel, has been largely closed by Israel since May 2024.
It is expected to reopen soon following the formation of a Palestinian technocratic committee tasked with managing daily life in the war-battered enclave under US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.
Tel Aviv has announced a limited reopening for pedestrians only, not for humanitarian aid, in the coming days. However, It is reportedly pressing for more Palestinians to leave than enter Gaza as a precondition for reopening.
A source familiar with the discussions told the Associated Press that an initial plan would allow 50 people in daily and 150 out, which appears to reflect a long-standing Israeli scheme to reduce Gaza’s population.
Egypt has repeatedly rejected Israeli attempts to permanently displace Gaza residents, emphasizing that the Rafah crossing would not be used as a gateway for Palestinian expulsion.
Al-Dalil stressed that while Israel reportedly seeks the departure of Palestinians without return, Egypt insists on a reciprocal approach to protect Palestinian rights and ensure that the Palestinian cause is not eradicated.
